Oral Health for Babies & Toddlers

Baby Smile [1]

A healthy smile starts long before the first tooth appears. Caring for your baby’s mouth early helps prevent cavities and keeps their gums healthy. Baby teeth play an important role — they help your child chew, speak clearly, and save space for their adult teeth. Even before teeth come in, gently cleaning your baby’s gums after feedings builds healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Starting early sets the foundation for strong, healthy smiles as they grow.

Quick Tips For Keeping Your Baby's Mouth Healthy

1. When should my baby see a dentist?
By their first birthday — or sooner if you notice white spots or anything unusual.

2. How do I clean my baby’s mouth before teeth come in?
Gently wipe gums with a clean, damp washcloth after feedings.

3. When can I use toothpaste?
Start when the first tooth appears (around 6–10 months) with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste.

4. What should my baby drink?
Breast milk is best. If using formula, choose one with iron. Wait until age 1 for cow’s milk or juice.

5. Should I give my baby sweets?
Skip candy, cookies, cake, and sugary drinks. They’re hard on tiny teeth.
