FOOD DAY 2013

The Nutrition & Physical Activity Taskforce wants to thank all participants of Food Day 2013-a community event celebrating healthy lifestyles and the national movement for nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food.  Approximately 100 people attended the event held on Thursday, October 24th in Mammoth Lakes.

The evening began with appetizers and spa water prepared by Trish Qualls and the Culinary Arts Students of Mammoth High School.  Next, John Simeon and the Health Science Academy students brought children ages 4 years to 4th grade to their classroom for a vegetable taste test and some fun games related to healthy eating.  Meanwhile, adults and students listened to presentations on fun, easy exercises for the whole family by Kathy Dolan; energy balance by Todd Hensley; and what food is by Mary Pipersky.

The event concluded with tasting delicious foods prepared by Lynne's Garden of Eat'n, Mammoth Mountain, Toomey’s, and Z-Pizza in addition to a raffle of gift certificates for local restaurants in Mammoth Lakes.

We acknowledge the hard work, generosity and creative support that went into making Food Day 2013 a great success. Key contributors included Mammoth High School (Trish Qualls and her Culinary Arts Students; John Simeon and the Health Science Academy Students; and Chris Powell for collaboration, facility use, and staff support).  In addition to the 4 restaurants who provided food tastings as mentioned above, we also want to acknowledge the gracious raffle prize donations from Sierra Nevada Lodge, Petra's Bistro, Vons, Bleu Handcrafted Foods, Gomez’s Restaurant, The Mogul, Z-Ranch, Nik-n-Willie’s, Stellar Brew and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.  All of the time and energy put forth to make this event so successful was greatly appreciated, and we look forward to working together again for Food Day 2014!

Sincerely,
Sandra Pearce and the Nutrition & Physical Activity Taskforce

FOOD DAY 2012

Over 125 people attended Mammoth Lakes' first Food Day held on Wednesday, October 24th in the Mammoth High School (MHS) Multi Purpose Room.  Attendees learned that 1 out of 3 school-aged children in Mono County are overweight or obese; watched a documentary about making healthy personal choices, and participated in discussions about what can be done locally to reverse the obesity epidemic.  The most delicious part of the evening thanks to the MHS Culinary Arts Students, Java Joint, Mammoth Mountain, Sierra Bounty/Stellar Brew, Toomey’s, and Z-Pizza was enjoying healthy and nutritious food options that are available right here in Mammoth Lakes.

Please see the Food Day Program and Overweight & Obesity Rates for Mono County Students handout in Supporting Documents below for more information.  If you are interested in joining the the Nutrition & Physical Activity Taskforce, please contact the Mono County Health Department at (760) 924-1830.
