On Sunday, October 09, 2016, the Mammoth Lakes Police Department responded to reports of gunshots in the area of 200 Azimuth in the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Officers arrived on scene and located a male victim who appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Mono County paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

RE: Potential for Flash Floods and Rock Slides
Thunderstorms are currently forecast for the Eastern Sierra over the next four days, with the highest probability of thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday. Such storms can cause flash flooding and rock slides in burn areas across the county. Residents, tourists and structures affected by recent fires are most at risk. Those affected should seek higher ground outside of the burn areas through the duration and immediately following a storm cell.

RE: Immobilized Hikers
On July 19, 2016, Mono County Dispatch received a 911 call regarding an injured hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) near Leavitt Lake. The hiker had been immobilized due to her injuries reported as a possible broken ankle. Deputies from the Mono County Sheriff’s Office, Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue, and Tuolumne County Search and Rescue responded.

The Marina Fire, which is located north of Lee Vining and crossed over a portion of Highway 395, is
now at 74% containment and the total acreage burned remains at 654 acres. A total of 517 personnel are assigned to the incident, including fourteen hand crews, eighteen engines, two dozers, five helicopters, and three water tenders.

Re: Body Found in Crowley Lake
On the morning of Sunday, May 22, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the body of a deceased male was found in Crowley Lake. Mono County Sheriff’s deputies were on scene within minutes and took custody of the deceased person. The body is presumed to be that of missing person Juan Vierheller, who was last seen at Beaver Cove in the early morning of Friday, May 13. The family of the missing person has been notified. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

On Friday, May 13, at approximately 1 p.m., the Mono County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a group of campers at Crowley Lake reporting that one member of their group was missing. The missing person, Juan Manuel Vierheller, age 27, of La Habra, had last been seen in the very early hours of Friday morning at their campsite near the shore of Beaver Cove at Crowley Lake.

There is currently a flash flood warning in affect for the Chalfant area. Highway 6 is closed from Browns Subdivision Road to the base of Mathew Hill. Motorist are advised to use an alternate route.
Voluntary evacuation notices have been issued for the community of Chalfant in the Sacramento Street area, from Valley Road to White Mountain due to flooding. Sheriff's Deputies are on scene to assist any evacuees.
