Employment Opportunities

County Overview:
Mono County was created on April 21, 1861. It is located on the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The County covers approximately 3100 square miles of mountainous and high desert terrain. The population of the County during the last census was 12,853 permanent residents. The historic town of Bridgeport is the County Seat. There are numerous smaller communities and towns in the County, the largest being the only incorporated town in the County, the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Mono County is a major tourist destination for skiing, fishing, hunting and a great deal of other outdoor recreational activities.

Department Overview:
The Sheriff’s Department is headed by the Sheriff-Coroner. The Administrative Staff is comprised of an Undersheriff, two Lieutenants, one Administrative Secretary/Public Information Officer and one Financial Analyst. The field force is staffed by the following: four Sergeants, twelve Beat Deputies, two Investigators, one Narcotics Investigator, two Bailiffs, one Civil Deputy, one School Resource Deputy and three full-time Safety Officers. The Sheriff’s Department also staffs the Jail, Dispatch and Records Units with One Sergeant, two Supervising Public Safety Officers, fifteen Public Safety Officers and two Chefs. The Department dispatches for the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, the County E. M.S. Department, County Animal Control and Eleven Fire Districts.

Our ‘Beat Deputies’ or ‘Resident Deputies’ are Deputies that are required to reside in a specific geographical area of the county. When a Deputy is hired and that individual is going to be assigned a Beat, the Deputy is required to reside in the Beat’s geographical area. The Beat assignment is determined at the time of hiring and is dependent on where the Department opening is at the time. On some occasions, the new hire is not assigned a Beat: that would occur if and when the opening is in a non-Resident Deputy Position such as Bailiff, Civil, Narcotics Task Force, SRO and others.
